Before the exam:

If you have never studied the language, you are not required to take a Placement Examination and should register for the level 1 course in your language area (either Spanish 1, French 1, German 1.)

If you have previous experience in the language you wish to study, you are required to take the WebCAPE Placement Examination to determine placement in the appropriate course.  Please note that you may place in a Level 1 course.

The exam:

Our Computer Adaptive Placement Exam will determine your competency level in less than twenty minutes.  The exam selects each test item as a result of your answer to a previous question and therefore adapts to your level of ability.  The test provides immediate feedback, so upon completion of the exam, you will be able to see your score and the corresponding course you should register for.

1.  If you place in a 4+ level after taking the exam, please contact Raul Sanchez at (646) 312-5109 for a consultation before registering for an appropriate foreign language course. 

2.  You should not register for a course lower or higher than where you were placed without prior approval.
